Does API Melafix expire?

API Melafix is a water treatment product that can be used for open wounds, open abrasions, fin rot, eye cloud, slime cloud and mouth fungus. So, does this produce expire? You can find out in the article at Aquarium Blueprints.

Quick Summary

API Melafix will expire 3 years after the day it was manufactured. You can find the expiration date near the top of the bottle it came with.

We don’t recommend using expired or spoiled Melafix as it may harm your already vulnerable fish. Instead, you need to get a fresh water treatment.

If you accidentally added expired or spoiled Melafix, then make sure you do major water changes and add activated carbon in order to make your aquarium safe again for your fish and other aquatic pets.

What to do when you accidentally added expired Melafix in your tank

If you accidentally dosed an expired Melafix into your aquarium, then you can try taking the following steps:

1. Do a major water change of at least 50% as soon as possible. This will help dilute the expired Melafix.

2. Add activated carbon into the fish tank filter or directly in the tank. This will help remove Melafix from your tank water.

3. Observe your fish closely to see if they are showing the following signs of stress:

  • Darting around the aquarium.
  • Grasping for air near at the water surface.
  • Twitching movements.

4. If you see signs of stress, then we recommend doing another round of water change of at least 50%.

5. Keep doing water changes until your fish shows no signs of stress from the expired Melafix.
