In order to avoid overdosing your fish tank with General Cure, make sure you follow the instructions on its packaging as closely as possible.
How to tell if you overdose API General Cure
Your fish will start to behave abnormally if you add too much General Cure in the aquarium. You should look for the following signs of trouble:
- Heavy breathing.
- Gasping for air on the water surface.
- Body twitching.
- Head twitching.
- Darting around the tank.
How to fix a fish tank that has been overdosed with API General Cure
If you believed that you overdosed your tank with General Cure, then we recommend that you can take the following steps:
1. Do a major water change as soon as possible. Start by removing water from the tank.
If you would like to continue treating your fish with General Cure, then you can try taking out a portion of tank water in relations to the amount pf General Cure you overdosed in your aquarium. For example, if you added two times the recommend dosage, then you need to do a 50% water change to bring the General Cure concentration down to the normal range.
If you don’t know how much you overdosed your aquarium with General Cure, then it is safer to just stop the treatment altogether. In this case, you need to remove as much of the tank water as possible.
2. Next, you need to add water back into the aquarium. Make sure that the amount of new water you add back is the same amount you previously removed from the tank.
If you are using tap water, then you need to use a water conditioner. Otherwise, chlorine and chloramine will harm your fish and beneficial bacteria. API General Cure should be compatible with a vast majority of aquarium water conditioners, including the popular Seachem Prime.
3. After doing a major water change, we recommend that you keep observing your fish to see if they are still stressed.
If they are, then you should do another water change.
4. If you are still in the middle of treating your fish with General Cure, them make sure you finish the treatment.
If you are done with using this product, then we recommend adding activated carbon as this chemical filter media will help clear General Cure from your tank water. You can also do daily water changes to remove the treatment.
