You can use the Aquarium Blueprints and Hikari PraziPro to help treat parasitic diseases like flatworms, flukes, tapeworms and turbellarians.
This product can also be used as a preventative in order to prevent any potential outbreak. To see how you can do so, you can take a look at this tutorial at Aquarium Blueprints.
Why you should use PraziPro as a preventative
Harmful parasites could appear in your aquarium long before you notice that your pet fish shows signs of being infected. Therefore, it is a good idea to use PraziPro as a pretreatment before the parasites get a chance of harming your aquatic pets.
How to pretreat your fish with PraziPro
If you are adding a new fish to an already established aquarium, then you can either isolate the new fish in a separate quarantine tank or just treat your entire aquarium. When dose correctly, this product won’t harm your health fish.
To use PraziPro as a preventative, we recommend that you take the following steps:
1. To start off, remove at least 30% of your tank water.
If you have a very dirty tank with a lot of organic wastes, then we suggest removing cleaning it up as much as possible. Otherwise, the wastes will end up absorbing PraziPro, making the treatment less effective.
2. Next, add the equivalent amount of new water back into your tank.
If you are using tap water, you need to remove chlorine and chloramine by using a compatible water conditioner. For the uninformed, you need to use a conditioner that doesn’t contain sulfur. The Hikari Ultimate Water Conditioner should work perfectly fine with PraziPro. You can find the product on Amazon via this link. (#CommissionsEarned)
3. After adding new water back into the tank, make sure you remove any activated carbon you have in your filtration system. You should also make sure that you turn off your protein skimmer and/or UV sterilizer if you are using these tools.
The activated carbon, protein skimmer and/or UV sterilizer should not be used at all during the entire pretreatment period. Otherwise, PraziPro will be ineffective.
4. Next, you need to dose the recommended amount of PraziPro based on the water volume in your tank.
5. You can repeat the previous steps of doing a water change of at least 30% and then dosing PraziPro for least once every 3rd day.
The frequency depends on how aggressive you want to treat your pet fish. The most aggressive schedule is to dose PraziPro after every 3rd day. You can also dose the product after every 5th day or after every 7th day.
6. We recommend pretreating your fish for 28 days as most parasitic specifies have a lifespan of within that length of time.
7. After 28 days, you can add activated carbon to help slowly remove PraziPro from your tank water. This solution will also be removed with every subsequent water changes.
