How to calculate the water volume of your fish tank

If you forgot how much water your fish tank can hold, then you need to calculate the volume. In order to find the maximum water volume, you need to measure the length, width and height of the aquarium in inches. Multiply all three measurements to get cubic inches. 1 gallon of water is equal to around 231 cubic inches of space inside your tank.

Keep in mind that other objects in your tank, such as the substrate, rocks, décor and aquarium equipment, will occupy space. Therefore, you may also want to that these factor into account. If you can weigh these objects, then 1 gallon of water is approximately the same as 8.3 pounds of weight. Therefore, you may want to subtract it from the total water volume.

If you didn’t fill up your aquarium all the way to the top, then you might also want to convert the open-air space, in cubic inches, to gallons and then subtract that number from the total water volume.
