Top 7 Gen 1 Fish Pokemon

Although there are currently more than 800 Pokemon introduced so far, the original roster of 151 in Pokemon Blue, Red and Yellow is still the most iconic. Among them are several fish types.

Below, you can find Aquarium Blueprints’ top 7 Fish Pokemon from the first generation.

Note: Keep in mind that we are only counting fish. So, other water creatures such as frogs (Poliwag and Poliwhirl) invertebrates (Shellder, Krabby, Kingler and Staryu), mammals (Seel and Vaporeon), turtles (Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise and Lapras) in addition star fish (Staryu and Starmie) aren’t counted in this particular list.

7. Magikarp

  • Height: 2 feet and 11 inches (or 0.9 meters)
  • Weight: 22 pounds (or 10 kilograms)
  • Type: Water
  • Kanto Pokédex Number: 129

Magikarp is treated like sort of a joke in both the Pokemon videogame in addition to the Pokemon anime. The common fish simply flops around when summoned on land and is generally useless in battle. It is also treated as food for other Pokemon in the animation.

With that said, Magikarp is a very hardy fish as it can be found in all kinds of water, from freshwater to saltwater. Not to mention that the fish still looks great with its crown-like fins as well super long barbells.

Magikarp is based on koi and carp fish species.

6. Goldeen

  • Height: 2 feet (or 0.6 meters)
  • Weight: 33.1 pounds (or 15 kilograms)
  • Type: Water
  • Kanto Pokédex Number: 118

Another common fish you find in Pokemon Blue, Red and Yellow is Goldeen. Although it may not be the most battle-ready Pokemon, it does have some defensive abilities such as Swift Swim (which increase its speed when it’s raining) and Water Veil (which stops it from getting burned).

The Goldeen is more known for its looks with its long, beautiful fins. The fish also has an attractive color combination of orange and white. Furthermore, it has a horn, which is used to attack its opponent.

Goldeen is, of course, based on gold fish, especially the comet or fantail variants.

5. Horsea

  • Height: 1 feet and 4 inches (or 0.4 meters)
  • Weight: 17.6 pounds (or 8 kilograms)
  • Type: Water
  • Kanto Pokédex Number: 116

Horsea (which is a common Pokemon in Red and Blue but uncommon in Yellow) is a little bit more helpful in battle as it comes with Sniper, an ability that power ups its critical hits. It also comes with the aforementioned Swift Swim ability that increases its speed during the rain.

With that said, Horsea is more known for being one of the cutest Pokemon in the first generation with its blue scale, big eyes and large snout.

Horsea is, of course, based on the seahorse.

4. Seaking

  • Height: 4 feet and 3 inches (or 1.3 meters)
  • Weight: 86 pounds (or 39 kilograms)
  • Type: Water
  • Kanto Pokédex Number: 119

Seaking is the evolved form of Goldeen. To get the evolution, you need to reach level 33. Although Seaking has the same natural abilities as Goldeen (Swift Swim and Water Veil), its evolved form is simply more powerful and battle ready than its predecessor.

Seaking is twice as big as Golden. It still has the same long fins as well as white and orange colorations. With that said, the evolved form also features a few black spots.

Seaking looks like the comet and fantail goldfish.

3. Seadra

  • Height: 3 feet and 11 inches (or 1.2 meters)
  • Weight: 55.1 pounds (or 25 kilograms)
  • Type: Water
  • Kanto Pokédex Number: 117

Seadra is the evolved form of Horsea. You will have to raise Horsea up to level 32 to trigger the evolution. Seadra adds a new natural ability calls the Poison Point, which has a 30 percent chance of poison any opponents who attacks it during battle.

Seadra is three times bigger than Horsea and way more menacing looking. Its body is covered with poisonous spines.

Seadra looks like a spiny seahorse.

2. Kingdra

  • Height: 5 feet and 11 inches (or 1.8 meters)
  • Weight: 335.1 pounds (or 152 kilograms)
  • Type: Dragon/Water
  • Kanto Pokédex Number: 118

Kingdra is the evolved form of Seadra. To trigger the evolution, you need to use a Dragon Scale. So it’s technically a cross between a fish and water dragon. Although it loses its poison defensive ability during evolution, the Kingdra makes up for it being much more of a powerhouse during fights.

The Kingdra is quiet a big larger than the Seadra and Horsea. It has thorn-like horns and fins in addition to a yellow belly.

Kingdra resembles the leafy seadragon.

1. Gyarados

  • Height: 21 feet and 04 inches (or 6.5 meters)
  • Weight: 518.1 pounds (or 235 kilograms)
  • Type: Flying/Water
  • Kanto Pokédex Number: 130

Although the aforementioned Magikarp may be seen as a joke to some, the relatively useless Pokemon does evolve into one of the coolest Pokemon in Gyarados. The menacing creature comes with the ability of Intimidate, which will lower the attack power of its opponent during battle.

The impressive Gyarados is more than 21 feet long and is covered with blue and yellow scales. It has white fins and a light brown underbelly. The only thing that it kept from its Magikarp form is the long barbells.

Gyarados looks like a mix of two mythical creatures: Chinese Dragon and Sea Serpent.
