How to fix Fluval G3 and G6 low flow issues

If you have a Fluval G3 or Fluval G6, then you may get the following error message on its LCD screen:

Alert.

Low Flow.

Refer to instruction’s manual.

To see how you can fix these water flow issues, you can take a look at this troubleshooting tutorial at Aquarium Blueprints.

1. To start off, you should unplug your G3 or G6 canister filter from the power outlet as you may need to open the top and/or move it around.

2. You should also detach the hosing attached to the filter.

3. After turning off the canister and removing the hosing, the first potential fix you can try is to rinse clean the chemical filter cartridge, mechanical filter cartridge as well as the biological filter media inside the filter.

If the mechanical filter cartridge still looks quite dirty even after a thorough rinsing, then you may want to consider replacing the cartridge as it is going to get clogged up quite easily.

4. You may also want to consider cleaning the tubing and hosing of your filter as the inner walls for these will get clogged as well, resulting in a slowed water flow.

To clean these parts, you can try using high pressure water to blast the debris out.

5. After cleaning your G3 or G6, make sure that all the filter cartridges and other medias are properly put back into their designated positions in your canister.

6. Once you are done with the cleaning process, we recommend taking a look at how your cansiter was previously positioned.

Ideally, you need to put the filter below your fish tank. However, you need to make sure that it is no more than 4.9 feet below the bottom of aquarium.

6. You should also make sure that the hosing you use to connect the canister to your fish tank does not exceed 9.8 feet in total.

7. Furthermore, avoid using any other hosing aside from the one that came with your filter.

8. You need to also make sure that the hosing isn’t pinched or squeezed. Ideally, these parts should provide a straight path (with no loops) between your fish tank and the canister.

9. Once you are done cleaning and/or repositioning you’re your Fluval G3 or Fluval G6, you can reconnect the hosing.

10. Start adding tank water back into your canister filter by pressing the priming button all the way down several times until you notice that air bubbles are no longer coming out of the output nozzle.

11. Afterwards, you can plug the G3 or G6 back into the power outlet to turn it back on.

12. Wait for a little bit for the canister to start pumping water again and then check the LCD screen to see if you still get the same low flow warning message.

If the error is still showing up on the display screen, then we recommend contacting Fluval for additional support.
