How much Melafix should you dose per gallon and per liter?

API Melafix will help your pet fish fight off various bacterial infections. So, how much of this solution, which is made up of tree tea oil, should you add to your fish tank?

You can find out in this dosage guide from Aquarium Blueprints.

How much Melafix should you dose per gallon?

According to API, you need to add 5 mL of Melafix for every 10 gallons of tank water in your aquarium. You can find a dosage breakdown for the most common tank sizes, based on gallons, below:

  • 2.5-gallon tank = add 1.25 mL
  • 5-gallon tank = add 2.5 mL
  • 10-gallon tank = add 5 mL
  • 15-gallon tank = add 7.5 mL
  • 20-gallon tank = add 10 mL
  • 25-gallon tank = add 12.5 mL
  • 29-gallon tank = add 14.5 mL
  • 30-gallon tank = add 15 mL
  • 40-gallon tank = add 20 mL
  • 50-gallon tank = add 25 mL
  • 55-gallon tank = add 27.5 mL
  • 65-gallon tank = add 32.5 mL
  • 75-gallon tank = add 37.5 mL
  • 90-gallon tank = add 45 mL
  • 125-gallon tank = add 62.5 mL
  • 150-gallon tank = add 75 mL
  • 180-gallon tank = add 90 mL

If you tank size is not listed, then you can simply multiply 0.5 mL by the gallons of water in your aquarium to get the correct dose of Melafix.

There are also a few factors that you may want to take into your calculations. If you have a substrate, equipment, rocks and/or décor, then you may want to subtract them from the tank water volume. 1 gallon of water is around 8.3 pounds.

Furthermore, if the tank water does not fill all the way to the top, then you may want to subtract that empty space as well when it comes to calculating the tank water volume. 1 gallon of water is around 231 cubic inches.

Last but not least, it is very important to remember that you need to do a 25% water change every 7th day of dosing your tank with Melafix. Otherwise, you will end up with having more concentration of this product in your aquarium than recommended.

How much Melafix should you dose per liter?

If you using liter as a metric for your tank size, then API recommends that you dose 5 mL of Melafix for every 38 liters.

You can find the recommended dosage amount for some of the most common tank sizes, in liters, below:

  • 10-liter tank = add 1.3 mL
  • 20-liter tank = add 2.6 mL
  • 38-liter tank = add 5 mL
  • 40-liter tank = add 5.2 mL
  • 60-liter tank = add 7.8 mL
  • 80-liter tank = add 10.4 mL
  • 100-liter tank = add 13 mL
  • 116-liter tank = add 15.08 mL
  • 120-liter tank = add 15.6 mL
  • 160-liter tank = add 20.8 mL
  • 200-liter tank = add 26 mL
  • 220-liter tank = add 28.6 mL
  • 260-liter tank = add 33.8 mL
  • 300-liter tank = add 39 mL
  • 360-liter tank = add 46.8 mL
  • 500-liter tank = add 65 mL
  • 600-liter tank = add 78 mL
  • 720-liter tank = add 93.6 mL

If your aquarium size isn’t listed above, then you can multiple 0.13 mL by every liter of tank water in your aquarium to get the recommend dosage of Melafix.

As we stated above, you may also want to factor in any non-water objects and empty spaces in your tank when trying to determine how much water you have in your tank.
