Can you use Seachem Prime and Hikari Ich-X together?

To properly use Hikari Ich-X, you need to perform water changes. If you are using tap water for these changes, then you need to use a dechlorinator like Seachem Prime to remove chlorine and chloramine.

So, can you use Ich-X and Prime together? You can find out in this guide at Aquarium Blueprints.

About Seachem Prime

Seachem Prime is a popular water conditioner that will remove chlorine and chloramine, both of which will kill off the beneficial bacteria of your biological filtration, from your tap water.

This product will also detoxify ammonia, nitrites and nitrates for a maximum of 48 hours in addition to also detoxifying small traces of heavy metals.

About Hikari Ich-X

Hikari Ich-X is designed to treat Ich, Saprolegniasas, Trichodiniasis and Velvet (also known as Gold Dust).

The formula is made of water, less than 5% of formaldehyde, less than 2% of methanol and less than 0.1% of malachite green chloride.

Can you use Seachem Prime with Hikari Ich-X at the same time?

Seachem Prime can’t be used together with the Hikari Ich-X at the same time.

Prime is a sulfur-based water conditioner as you can easily tell with the rotten egg smell. Sulfur not only makes Ich-X less effective in treating your pet fish, it will also deplete the oxygen levels in your tank water.

If you are looking for a compatible water conditioner to use with Ich-X then, Hikari recommends using either their Ultimate brand or a combination of their Stress-X and ClorAm-X brands.

How to use Seachem Prime with Hikari Ich-X

If you have no other choice but to use Prime with Ich-X, then you can safely do so with a lot of pre-planning.

To see how you can do so, you can take the following steps:

1. First off, you will need several buckets or containers that can hold water.

2. Next, you need to fill these buckets or containers with tap water and then add the appropriate amount of Seachem Prime in each one.

The official dosage instruction is 5 mL (which is 1 capful) for every 50 gallons (or 200 liters).

3. Add adding Prime, let the water in the buckets and containers sit for at least 48 hours as the water conditioner will be exhausted by then.

4. If you haven’t done so already, remove any carbon media you have in your filter.

5. You should also make sure that the temperature in your aquarium is at least 50ºF (or 10°C).

6. Afterwards, add 5 mL (which is a teaspoonful) of Ich-X for every 10 gallons (or 40 liters) in your fish tank.

7. Wait between 8 hours to 24 hours for Ich-X to treat your fish.

8. After waiting at least 8 hours, you need to do a water change of at least 1/3 of your tank volume. Ich-X will become more effective with bigger water changes.

Make sure you are adding the water from the aforementioned buckets or containers back into your fish tank.

9. Repeat the previous steps over and over again until you no longer see any visible signs of Ich, Saprolegniasas, Trichodiniasis and/or Velvet.

10. If you no longer see signs of any of the aforementioned diseases, then continue using Ich-X and doing water changes for another three days to ensure that the fungal and/or protozoan issues won’t have any possibility of reoccurring.

11. To completely remove Ich-X from your tank after treatment, we recommend that you add carbon in your filter media and perform multiple large water changes.

12. You should also keep an eye on your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels as using Ich-X may disrupt the biological filtration balance in your fish tank.
