Can you use Seachem Cupramine together with Seachem ParaGuard?

Seachem Cupramine and Seachem ParaGuard are both used to treat various pet fish diseases. So, can you use these two solutions together at the same time?

You can find out in this guide from Aquarium Blueprints.

Can you use Seachem Cupramine and Seachem ParaGuard together?

According to Seachem, you can’t use Cupramine together with ParaGuard. This is because ParaGuard is a reducing agent that will convert Cupramine into a more toxic form. As a result, will already sick fish will be harmed due to the mixture.

Therefore, we recommend just using one of these products at a time.

For the uninformed, both the Seachem Cupramine and Seachem ParaGuard can be used to treat Ich (known as Ichthyophthirius in freshwater as well as Cryptocaryon in saltwater) and Velvet (known as Piscinoodinium in freshwater as well as Amyloodinium in saltwater).

ParaGuard will also help with fin rot, gill flukes (Monogenenean trematodes) and skin flukes (Dactylogyrus trematodes).

As you can see above, the Cupramine and ParaGuard overlapped when it comes to treating Ich and Velvet. However, ParaGuard will also help treat fin rot, gill flukes and skin flukes.

So, if your pet fish is suffering from both Ich and/or Velvet, then you can use either Cupramine or ParaGuard. If you fish is suffering from Ich, Velvet, fin rot, gill flukes and/or skin flukes, then you should only dose ParaGuard.

How to use Cupramine and then ParaGuard

If you really want to use both products in the same fish tank, then you can try doing the following:

1. We recommend using Cupramine first as you can test for the concentration of this treatment. This is very important as you don’t want to mix the two products together.

2. Follow our treatment schedule guide for the Seachem Cupramine.

3. Once you are done, make sure you get rid of all traces of Cupramine in your fish tank (you can refer to the aforementioned treatment schedule guide to see how you can do so).

4. After removing Cupramine from your tank water, you can then start dosing Seachem ParaGuard without having to worry about it being mixed with copper.

5. You can take a look at our treatment schedule guide for ParaGuard to see how you can properly treat your sick fish with this product.

6. Once you are done with the ParaGuard, then we also recommend that you completely remove the solution from your aquarium water by following the aforementioned treatment schedule article.
